South Texas College of Law Courses

The Course Listings page is a searchable resource that contains course details, descriptions, prerequisites, and book information for certain courses. Courses can be searched by term, course name, professor, and course type (e.g., bar courses, specialized courses, paper seminars). The Juris Doctor degree at South Texas Law requires 90 credit hours for graduation, which can be earned through a full-time or part-time program. Both tracks include 39 hours of mandatory credit as part of the “first year” program, which emphasizes the core courses of U.S. legal education: civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law, property, and tort. In their first year, students must also take three additional substantive courses – federal income tax, evidence, and professional liability – as well as practical competency-based courses that cover the fundamental skills of legal writing and research. In addition to the first-year program, all South Texas law students complete an extensive writing project and six hours of professional skills classes. The rest of the academic program is optional, although South Texas Law offers 16 different “pathways to practice” that suggest coursework and competency-based learning to prepare students for different career options. This course introduces the fundamental concepts of family law with an emphasis on the role of paralegals. Topics include formal and informal marriages, divorce, annulment, marital property, and the parent-child relationship. South Texas College of Law Houston is also part of a consortium of four independent ABA and AALS accredited U.S. law schools – California Western School of Law, New England School of Law, and William Mitchell College of Law. [4] The Innovative Legal Education Consortium pools resources to enhance and strengthen the educational mission of each school individually and collectively.

This partnership provides access to educational programs at the national and international levels. The school has also received the highest recognition from PreLaw Plus magazine” This course introduces standard and/or computer-assisted legal research techniques in a law library that emphasizes the role of the paralegal. Wade in a recent opinion piece in Slate. In 1998, South Texas College of Law Houston (then South Texas College of Law) attempted to merge with Texas A&M University in a private/public partnership. According to the proposal, the law school would have remained a private school, but would have been labeled as a Texas A&M Law Center and would have awarded law degrees under the A&M seal. [22] The agreement fell through after a lengthy legal battle with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the governing body of state public institutions. The courts ruled that the schools did not obtain board approval before entering into the agreement. [23] The University of Houston and other institutions have expressed concerns about the partnership. [24] In 2013, Texas A&M University entered into a similar agreement with Texas Wesleyan School of Law in Fort Worth, Texas, establishing Texas A&M University School of Law. [25] In addition to the school`s academic programs, South Texas Law is also home to three thriving academic centers, providing students with a variety of curricular and extracurricular opportunities to enhance their education. The law school campus is located in the heart of downtown Houston, a few blocks from the Skyline neighborhood. The vibrant community around campus provides students with endless opportunities for dining, entertainment, living, and recreation. The main downtown parks are minutes from the law school. Students have a number of housing options both in downtown and in the many neighborhoods of Houston`s outer loops. The city is one of the largest in the country and offers students virtually all amenities. Houston is famous for its diversity and a mix of cultures where all students find experiences, food, and a quality of life hard to beat. This course introduces the fundamental concepts of immigration law, including substantive and procedural law related to visa application, withdrawal, naturalization and citizenship, with an emphasis on the role of the paralegal in immigration law.

The South Texas Law Career Resources Center (CRC) offers a wide range of services to its students and alumni. These services work closely with the school`s Pathway to Practice program to guide students towards careers that combine their academic careers with their strengths and passions. The CRC manages the school`s on-campus interview program and collects resumes from interested students. All students meet with guidance counsellors to learn about job search strategies and review their resumes and cover letters. Throughout the school year, CRC offers many career development programs, ranging from speakers to networking events. Prerequisite: Students enrolled in the Associate Degree Program must have completed 46 semester credit hours. The Faculty of Law offers both summer programs and full-semester study abroad opportunities. In the summer program, South Texas Law has partnered with other law schools to offer students many options in countries such as Ireland, the Czech Republic, and even Malta.
